Flanker Direction Blitz
Flanker Direction Blitz
A row of 5 symbols will appear. Identify the direction of the CENTER ARROW as rapidly as possible.
Ignore flanking arrows pointing in the opposite direction. 30 high-speed trials.
Respond as quickly and accurately as possible. Ignore flanking symbols.
The Eriksen Flanker Task: Selective Attention & Response Competition
The Eriksen Flanker task assesses the human visual system's capacity to suppress distracting visual noise in the immediate spatial periphery. When flanking distractors indicate the opposite motor action from the central target, cognitive response competition slows execution and elevates error rates.
1. How to Play & Controls
A string of 5 arrows will appear (e.g. <<><<). Focus exclusively on the center arrow and ignore the flanking arrows. Press [←] / [A] for Left or [→] / [D] for Right.
2. Congruence & Flanker Effect
Trials are split between congruent (all pointing same way) and incongruent (flankers point opposite). Your interference cost is measured by the reaction delay on incongruent trials.
3. Scientific Foundation
Introduced by Barbara A. Eriksen and Charles W. Eriksen (1974, Perception & Psychophysics), the flanker paradigm evaluates the spatial spotlight of attention and anterior cingulate conflict monitoring.
