Memory Matrix: Visuospatial Sketchpad & Pattern Recall
The Memory Matrix paradigm assesses visuospatial short-term memory and chunking ability. Unlike verbal memory tasks that depend on language rehearsal, matrix memory tasks isolate the visuospatial sketchpad—the cognitive system responsible for creating, holding, and manipulating temporary visual patterns in memory.
1. How to Play & Controls
A randomized pattern of filled tiles flashes on the grid for 1.2 seconds. After the retention mask clears, tap or click the tiles where the pattern appeared. Complete each span to progress to higher grid dimensions.
2. Matrix Complexity & Scoring
Grids expand from 3x3 (3-tile span) up to 5x5 (10-tile span). You have 3 lives. Points scale exponentially based on memory load and pattern complexity.
3. Scientific Foundation
Derived from the classic Corsi Block-Tapping test (Corsi, 1972) and visual pattern test research (Della Sala et al., 1999), spatial matrix recall is widely used to evaluate non-verbal cognitive storage capacity.
