Understanding Dual N-Back: Working Memory & Cognitive Control
Dual N-Back is one of the most widely researched paradigms in cognitive psychology for probing working memory capacity and executive updating. While standard tasks involve a single perceptual channel, Dual N-Back requires the simultaneous monitoring and updating of two independent information streams: spatial position (visuospatial sketchpad) and letter identity (phonological loop).
1. How to Play & Controls
In each trial, a square flashes on the 3x3 grid while a letter is displayed. Compare both stimuli to the presentation N steps back. Press [A] for position match, [L] for letter match, or both if both match.
2. Scoring & Adaptive Progression
Performance is scored using decision accuracy across all trials combined with the active N-level weight. Scoring ≥ 85% advances you to the next N-back level, while < 65% drops one level.
3. Scientific Foundation
First formalized by W. K. Kirchner (1958) and popularized by Susanne Jaeggi et al. (2008, PNAS), the N-back paradigm measures executive updating, resistance to proactive interference, and working memory maintenance.
