3D Mental Rotation Speed

Two 3D cubes will appear side-by-side: Cube A and Cube B.

Mentally rotate the cubes in 3D space to check whether Cube B is the Same cube in a different orientation, or a Different cube with altered face features.

Speed matters: <3s = +20 pts, <6s = +10 pts, <8s = +5 pts. 8-second trial limit.

Mental Rotation: Spatial Manipulation & Viewpoint Invariance

Mental rotation is the ability to mentally simulate the rotation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations of objects. Psychologists study mental rotation to observe how the human brain maintains internal analog representations of physical geometry and inspects topological relationships from alternative visual angles.

1. How to Play & Controls

Examine the reference cube on the left and the candidate cube on the right. Determine whether the candidate is a valid 3D rotation of the reference, or an impossible mirror enantiomer. Press [1] for Same or [2] for Different.

2. Scoring & Angular Disparity

Points are awarded for accurate decisions with speed bonuses for sub-2.5s reaction times. Reaction latency increases linearly as the angular disparity between views increases from 45° to 180°.

3. Scientific Foundation

First demonstrated in seminal experiments by Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler (1971, Science), the mental rotation paradigm proves that mental manipulation is an analog spatial transformation rather than abstract propositional logic.
