Stroop Color Clash

Identify the INK COLOR of each printed word as quickly as possible.

Suppress the reflex to read the word text. If the word RED is printed in BLUE INK, press BLUE.

25 trials (40% congruent, 60% incongruent conflict). Speed throughput and inhibitory resistance dictate your performance score.

The Stroop Effect: Cognitive Conflict & Selective Attention

The Stroop task is a classic psychological paradigm demonstrating the interference that occurs when processing conflicting visual cues. Because word reading is an overlearned, automatic process for literate adults, naming the font color of an incongruent word (e.g. the word "BLUE" printed in red ink) requires deliberate executive suppression of the prepotent reading pathway.

1. How to Play & Controls

Words will appear in red, blue, green, or yellow ink. Your objective is to indicate the font color as fast as possible, completely ignoring what the word spells. Use keys [1-4] or tap the matching color buttons.

2. Interference Metric & Scoring

Scoring combines overall decision accuracy with reaction speed (sub-600ms latency bonuses). Your interference cost is measured as the millisecond delay between congruent and incongruent trials.

3. Scientific Foundation

First published by John Ridley Stroop in 1935 (Journal of Experimental Psychology), the Stroop paradigm is a cornerstone of neuropsychological batteries for assessing frontal lobe executive functioning.

Important Psychometric Note: Stroop Clash evaluates reaction speed, perceptual conflict resolution, and selective attention under practice conditions. It does not measure general intelligence (g) or replace a comprehensive psychometric assessment.
